I've stumbled across a few recipes for sloppy joes lately, and today is definitely a sloppy joe day. I rented a Philly Carshare car today, which is the first time I've driven since May. Also, I have been having to take a taxi to physical therapy so I wanted to see if I could drive myself, since I'm frustrated at not being able to do much myself. It was a success, although I was exhausted after physical therapy because man, it's hard! But the doctor said my leg looks good, and I can walk with one crutch instead of two, which is weird and kind of hard but good news! I'm getting there! And also, I had to get up early this morning to let some construction guys in to fix some of the problems with my house (FINALLY). So it's been a long day. Alex is back in school, (I'm so proud of him) so I wanted to cook dinner tonight because he has really long days. Sloppy joes it is! Easy, sloppy, and just what you want on a hot long day like today. Or at least, just what I want on a day like today. Serve them on your favorite bread, or just eat out of a bowl, maybe with some cheese on top! I served mine with fried okra, which I'll talk about next.
Also, on an unrelated note, as has anyone ever taken a really long train ride? Like more than 24 hours? How was it?

olive oil
1/2 onion
1 jalapeno
1 bell pepper
2 cloves garlic
1 pound bison (or beef, I love bison meat) ground
1 can diced tomatoes, or tomato sauce
2 T tomato paste
1/4 c ketchup
2 T worcestershire sauce (say it with me - woo-ster-sheer)
1 T cider vinegar
salt and pepper
1 t paprika
1 T brown sugar

it's not woo-ster-sheer, it's wuss-tah-sheeah.
ReplyDeleteanyway once I took a train for like 12 hours I think and it was fine. trains are neat because you can walk around. it was also neat because I had company and because I went up through northern california and oregon or whatever and it was really pretty. also, there was a special car where you can sit and look out the window, which was also neat.
finally, I don't know what difference it makes, but I soaked my okra slices in the buttermilk (actually just milk+vinegar) for a while, til they got all gooey from the okra slime.
Very much looking forward to your discussion of fried okra. The only time I tried that it came out magically burnt on the inside and raw on the outside. WTH! The cornmeal crust was nice though.

ReplyDeleteHAHA! I used milk+vinegar too. And I used frozen okra so they were already slimy. I love trains.

hmmm. I used frozen/thawed ones, maybe that made a difference? I'll post it soon!
